My FIL was fire control on the Corry which was sunk that day. He was in the water 2.5 hours with a head wound before being picked up by another boat. The day before he was chosen as one of the two soldiers who went to the ship Eisenhower was on to hear him speak about how important this mission was. They sent in the Corry because they had the best scores on the 5" guns. The captain of the Corry said they would run her aground if they had to to take out those German b*******. When it sunk it was believed it was a mine but some say it was a shore gun. For the Corry, they knew it was a suicide mission .They sent him stateside to recover from his injuries. Since the war in Europe was over, he then sailed out of Seattle on the Gerkyto fight the Japanese. My father in law lived to 99 years and two months. Rest in peace, You honored us with your service and bravery throughout.
