    Now, this is a seriously budget viola but it's a real instrument not a $75 super cheap Amazon.com piece of crap. It's made in the USA by a company called DZ Strad. This is their ultra-basic student model 101, which gets glowing reviews from string teachers across the country. It's not some mega thousand-collar instrument, but it will do nicely for starters. I got it for half of retail, 'cause the seller bought it for his kid and the young man played for a semester and quit. Dad says he hated it. I had my buddy Grif go over with me and play it, 'cause I have no clue. Grif says it's not a ~Great~ viola, but it looks like a viola, it sounds like a viola, and it plays like a viola. So it's not a viola-shaped packing crate. Hey it sounds like a viola to me, when Grif plays it. Grif says it will do just fine for me to learn the rudiments of playing an orchestral string instrument. Grif should know, he's played for 40 years.

    So I have a plan, along with taking Counterpoint at the University....for next Fall. I don't plan to ever be even a halfway decent viola player, but after a year of occasional lessons and weekly "string class" at the other college in the District I'll probably at least have a clue about what's going on with the players in the orchestra.
