THAT SUMMER

I learned a lot that summer. Like it doesn't always rain when it thunders.

I learned about that groaning, ponderous, heavy-laden death in my muscles when we finished. And how she became weightless.

I learned a little Portuguese and how to cook moqueca.

I learned how to swim naked in the black of the ocean when the moon is new and how to time the waves to match her whimpers.

I learned the blurry distinction between love and lust; and how to push the boundaries of each.

I learned to love that sweet-sour metallic scent of sweat as it dries on the skin.

I learned who she was.

And who I wished I wasn't.
