This happened several times with my husband's car keys. We had a hidey hole outside that only we knew about, and one day I didn't want to put the keys in there because although the location is quite well hidden, the person putting the keys in there might be seen from the street. A bit silly really. I still have no memory of where I put them that day, which was at least eight or nine years ago.

Another time he misplaced them on a snow camping trip. I had the spare with me at home. His car was with him in the car park, and without keys he had to take the bus home, five hours from the mountain, and have several keys cut, then bus back. I do not drive on that mountain road, it's far too scary and at the time I was working ridiculous hours and could not get away to take the spare up to him. At the end of the season, when he was unpacking all his stuff, he found the original keys in his bum bag, where they had been the whole time.
