It's April 1958. The Yankees are playing and intra-squad game in Florida. Yogi Berra is playing first base.
Mickey Mantle hits a single to left.Mantle says: "Hey Yogi, What time is it?" He knows Yogi is wearing a watch when he's not catching.
Yogi answers: "You mean ...now?"
I knew him after he left baseball, when he owned a workout place (he called the gym) in North New Jersey, and 30 years after Jackie Robinson was called safe at home when he stole home in a famous World Series game, Yogi would go on and on about the play. "BUT HE WAS OUT." And he get down in a squat, and show everybody (who had already heard the story a hundred times) "He touched my glove but he dint touch the plate."
I drove by the site, recently. I think it's a WalMart now.
Several bits of wisdom that are still true.
"Good pitching will always beat good hitting. And vice versa."
"You can observe a lot by watching."
"Always go to other people's funerals. Otherwise they won't go to yours."
"Predictions are hard. Especially about the future."
Yeah,he was rocket scientist smart and tempered it with a sense of humor.
Do they have a sign up in the parking lot about what used to be there?
Is there still the Yogi Berra Museum up in Montclair?
