One of the best books by one of the best authors, Country Dark takes us through the hidden woods and harsh life of Kentucky. Tucker is returning from the Korean War. He's something of a loner and happens upon a near rape of young Rhonda. We follow them both as they enter life together and form a family. But life is harsh and Country Dark is more a tale of survival, where death happens in the name of protecting your family. Offut has a way of allowing us to peer into the minds of these haggard souls.
Country Dark....country noir. The best.
1930's East Texas. Plenty of poverty to go around, plenty of murder too. This story is told by Harry Collins, an elderly man now, retelling time as the son of a constable, one with a conscience. There is the bigotry, the Ku Klux Klan and hints of similarities to the book To Kill a Mockingbird.Joe R. Lansdale has crafted an excellent country noir book, one where you don't have a chance to put it down. For the record, at some point I figured out who the culprit was, I just couldn't figure out the why. No worries, i'll be reading more by this author.
