It had taken two days of hard riding but we finally cut signs of the raiders.

Gunther and I had seen little indications that someone or something had passed along this path before. Those signs had been faint and barely noticeable to the average person. Only a skilled eye might find the little tell tale signs then distinguish them from the passing of any number of things through the area.

Those that we were hunting had been moving swiftly and done a good job of covering their trail. A recent rain fall had softened the ground enough that they had left very readable footprints when they had passed through. If I had not brought Gunther with Me to scout ahead moving much swifter then the rest of the patrol, a hard rain fall would have likely erased these tracks.

There were two types of impressions, One was clearly, roughly six goblins, from the depressions they had left, likely all males, perhaps one female or smaller male judging by the size and shape of the sandals which were clearly of goblin design.They were spread out as if on guard while they moved.

The second set of tracks were human, they were barefoot, and female, and all in a single line. Barefoot and in a single like it was an easy deduction that they were slaves in a coffle of some sort to keep them together, mostly likely a neck coffle of either chain or rope.

While I could not know for sure, as this could have been the tracks of another goblin raiding party. I was certain that the slave tracks were those of women take in the attack on the Tate farm a week ago. Arron Tate and his sons had been found dead, while his wife, two daughters, and three female servants had been not found. I would bet a double doubloon that the slaves with this party were those women, as it looked like the impressions of six women.

Still so quiet

Sissy brought her fawn in for the first time yesterday. It (since we can't tell yet if it's Sassy or Tyke is a happy fawn, running willy nilly in circles kicking up heels and actin a fool as mom ate her corn and peaches and cherries, a gift from the produce connection.
She is teaching it where it is safe to get free food, just like Sissys mom did before she was killed by a car.

I almost cried I was so glad to see the little bugger had survived it's first month or so of life.
After she had her fill, she took baby back to the thicket and Spike came in. He is now a nice 6 point buck. He's a little small as bucks go and not enough rack to make a trophy hunter dust off his boomstick this season in fall. The bucks aren't as big as they once were because machoboy doesn't want meat, he wants a wall hanger. We don't see racks now that you couldn't put a washtub over, they just can't leave the dominant bucks live long enough to breed and spread those superior genes to the next generation. Anyway, that's a different debate.
But Sissy, her brother spike and the older doe we call Auntie are all safe and happy up here on the hill.

Steps into the dungeon. Surprised how large it is.
Bare feet silent against the cool stones of the floor.
Pausing at the cells, peering inside each one.
Some empty, but a few are occupied.
All appear well-kept, and clean.
Being careful not to disturb the sleeping captives.
Reaching out to touch the bars of one of the cells,
feeling the cool metal against warm flesh.
Imagining what it might be like, to be locked inside one of the cells.
