she moves to where the whips and ninetails are....taking down each one...wiping each with a clean cloth....making sure they are tried and replacing them to their places to the wall....she turns slowly on her heels....facing the different benches and stools....making a large swipe across the top....cleaning each one....making sure the cloth remains clean....
seeing that it has gained some dust....she slowly steps back to the large bucket that had held the water....
dunking the cloth a few times as she slowly twists...wringing the cloth a bit more so to not make the floor wet....
she once again moves on her heels to return to where she was...

He was certainly not complaining and made that abundantly clear by sharpening his gaze into something almost feral, as he stood taking in the sight of you. After a long moment, the corner of his mouth twitched with a smile, and he stepped closer, drawing you in against his side, arm in arm.

He wondered then if the way you bit your lip like that was simply you being you, or another layer of subtext designed to tease and torment him. Upon consideration, he found that he was genuinely surprised to discover that it was a question which he couldn’t answer, and that the unknown, a thing which he had always abhorred, become something different, something exciting, with you.

“You are a marvel, Mrs Percival.”

He gave voice to the thought which followed on from that discovery, and a low chuckle rumbled up in his chest. Their steps carried them back in the direction of the hotel, but despite knowing what awaited them there, he kept an almost leisurely pace, finding that he simply enjoyed being able to be with you openly, under this ruse.

“I’ve arranged a wee stipend for Elsie, left waiting in her room, from both of us. I hope that is acceptable?” He turned to check your reaction as he continued, “it seemed the very least that we could do, to thank her for everything she’s done to help us.”

Your maid had been a lifeline to him during your illness and recovery, and she had taken it upon himself to continue to keep him in the know, when you could no longer do so. She too had been invaluable in helping them convey messages of planning this very trip, and the ruse that allowed it all to happen, stepping in to occupy your room and portray Miss Delilah Darling, while you became Mrs Percival.

It was suddenly absurd to him, all these hoops that they had to jump through, but life was what it was, and he would do whatever it took to allow them time together.

“She deserves, I think, to have as enjoyable a time as we two will share together. If only under different circumstances…”. He allowed his voice to trail off, and a grin to return to his warm his expression, leaving you in no doubt as to just what circumstances he had in mind for the two of them.
