1930's East Texas. Plenty of poverty to go around, plenty of murder too. This story is told by Harry Collins, an elderly man now, retelling time as the son of a constable, one with a conscience. There is the bigotry, the Ku Klux Klan and hints of similarities to the book To Kill a Mockingbird.Joe R. Lansdale has crafted an excellent country noir book, one where you don't have a chance to put it down. For the record, at some point I figured out who the culprit was, I just couldn't figure out the why. No worries, i'll be reading more by this author.

Bad Dolls is a book of four short horror stories that could easily be turned into Twilight Zone episodes. The book is marketed as horror, but not in the way of Stephen King or in the more violent genres. It's psychological horror. Peer pressure, shame and indecision are among the themes covered. Author Rachael Harrison has the human mind pegged perfectly.Recommended.

Taiko and Kenichi are recently paired up through a matchmaker and are married. He is a successful advertising manager who travels around cultivating clients, but he disappears and is presumed dead. She and his brother now embark on locating him.I won't spoil it, but there are many plot twists along the way. Family secrets and cover-ups litter the investigation as it's unveiled what ultimately happened to Teiko. I enjoy Japanese writing. There is a certain type of order to it all and, psychological analysis of each of the characters. In this case, author Matsumoto is a master at showing us each character, different in their own ways.
One of my favorite books of the year. Recommended!

The best way I can describe this book is, it's dark, even when it's sunny. The story is is set in a gritty, urban area of New Jersey, just outside New York City. The story juxtaposes Strike, an intelligent drug dealer who has risen slightly in the ranks against Rocco, the homicide detective who has maybe seen it all. Both want a better life. Strike has an exit plan monetarily and is a responsible human all things considered. Rocco wants a way out too, getting ideas from a Hollywood actor who has been shadowing him.
AS I read I was reminded of the TV shows Homicide: Life on the Street (based on Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets), the Wire and the Corner. The language is authentic, the setting authentic, all the characters authentic. This is not a book of melodrama, nor one of frivolous gun battles or car chases. There is a homicide and that brings together Strike and Rocco.
Be warned, the book is long and you need to concentrate while reading.

"The survivors (of a nuclear war) would envy the dead."
~ Nikita KhrushchevI read a fair amount of dystopian/post-apocalyptic books. Some are far-fetched, many are believable. This is one of the most chilling, believable books I have ever read. While it is a book of fiction, it is based on facts and interviews of those government officials, military officials and scientists, who are in the know.
I won't give away the details, but simply, one country pushes the button. The country under attack pushes their button. Another country thinking they are under attack, push theirs and the dominos fall leading to worldwide armageddon. It is easy to believe the uncertainty and paranoia of those in charge and the chaos that can ensue as decisions need to be made within minutes.
This book is not for the faint of heart. Recommended.
