Delilah Darling said:
She strolled along the beachfront, the seagulls circling above her head and calling out as the sea breeze whipped at the stray tendrils of her hair that had escaped the dozen or so pins that kept it all swept up atop her head. Dotted here and there were bathing huts out of which spilled those here to brave the cold waters of the Forth, while horses from the nearby barracks exercised at the far end of the sandy beach. But it was towards the pier she moved, her stride measured and her gaze full of self-possession as she blended in with the other holidaymakers who had ‘dressed down’ for their trip to the seaside.

As soon as she had brought up even the possibility of coming here, Hettie had summoned her army of dressmakers, proclaiming nothing in Delilah’s wardrobe as either fit for the seaside or even fitting her at all anymore. For once she hadn’t objected to her Aunt’s fussing, not when she wanted to look her best this weekend.

And she did, with the help of Elsie and a new seaside friendly walking suit. The creamy woollen affair with nautical navy-blue accents on the collar and ankle-length striped underskirt, its hem scandalously short for the city but perfect for the seaside, was less weighty than flannel and cool as muslin and, as always, exquisitely tailored.

The pier had only been a short walk from the hotel and as she climbed up its stairs the wooden structure stretched out before her to hang over the sea. There was a small pavilion at the far end, but it wasn’t to that her eye was drawn, rather the familiar figure about halfway along, engaged in conversation with two very scruffy looking lads.

She stopped, a smile ghosting across her lips as she stole this opportunity to watch you without your knowing. Even at this distance she knew you had slipped the boys some coin. They may not have been from the Cowgate, but like knew like, and Tommy Baird always looked after his own.

And then you turn, and your eyes find hers. Her smile blooms until it’s blinding as, her eyes dancing, she finds her feet again and moves towards you.
