There is a tradition among some that the owl is a harbinger for death. There is a novel on the topic "I heard the owl call my name."I've also been told that owls are not to be eaten, again as part of a tradition.
I won't say which tribes though, but non of the ones I interacted with down under had any tradition along that line, from what I can recollect.
