The club's nightly opening would begin before long and with that knowledge I left the booth and sought a space beside one of the unlit led-strewn pillars lining the main floor. This time phone was tucked away and allowed myself to soak in the ordinary, the quiet, the raw potential of this place one more time before it's transformation. Employees moved about below, freshening up what few remaining trivialities remained on their checklists and chatting with one another in that way of idle workers no matter where one might be.

For a brief while I was forgotten, an unremarkable shadow added to the others ringing the great open space. A pleasing reminder of simpler times, when one's attention was great and freely given rather than sought-for and hoarded like a dragon's gold. Fame was exhilarating, but anonymity was freeing. To possess both sides of that coin, if only for a little while, was a blessing.

A few moments longer was all I took, then I disappeared once more into the back offices and from there to the city streets beyond. It was enough to be seen; for mouths and ears to meet and the potential for old friends and new, eager acquaintances to present their intrigue. I was not a difficult man to reach for those who knew how, even if idle evenings were increasingly rare. And some... being the exception for every rule... required no invitation at all.
