It seemed unfair to him, suddenly, that he was the only one who had aged all this time. Unfair, and unkind. Such was the bargain he had made long ago, but that knowledge never made the passage of time, for everyone but him, any easier to accept.

Through the work of the literal hags in your coven, who fed you power, and the gift of vital essence from your Amara, whose… exertions, with her various gentlemen, literally kept you hale and healthy, and allowed the hags their glamour.

He did not judge you for those things, how could he? You were harming no one, and he would know for True if you did. There was, too, a selfish part of him which refused to look too deeply into the matter. He was merely grateful that you continued to be, even if you were no longer the youthful beauty you once were.

“You know I did not mean it like that, Veronica. Honestly, you are too accustomed to playing your tricksy games, and wheedling your bargains." He chuckled gently, reaching out to give your hand a gentle squeeze. “How many acorns fall from a single oak?”

“As for us? We had our time and I am certain, that of a good many others’ time, too, my dear.” He chuckled softly, his eyes full of warmth as they regarded you.

“Great beyond counting? You make it sound like I have been awfully busy.” she chides playfully. Given her longevity and that of her daughter and then her daughter after her and after her again, to count her line barely took up all the fingers of one hand. It certainly didn't need both.

But she was neither alone nor lonely, her coven her family in every way. The only other constant in her long life had been you, even if you had sounded slightly different in every encounter. A different lifetime, a different Gideon. Or versions of. But then you, like she, had learnt to adapt to the passing of time and thrived for it. Those of their kind who didn’t rarely survived.

Far too old to blush, she holds your gaze with an enigmatic smile. “As if I could forget.” She didn’t need to read between the lines of your declaration to know why Venice meant so much to you. But she, like Venice, was no longer what she once was.

“We did have quite the time, did we not, caro mio?” she mused with a wistful air. She wasn’t sure which of you had rescued the other, or if you had rescued each other, but the ensuing affair had been all consuming. Or should that be affairs, as you fell back into each other lifetime after lifetime, discarding every other lover in the wake of your passion.

That she was the only one of the two of you who had aged in all that time seemed somewhat unfair.
