awakening again
fully this time
struggling to get up standing on its hooves quickly
He breathed out a short, explosive puff of breath, the latter end of a chuckle, letting that speak his thoughts on you as a governess. He was certain you would make a fine one, no doubt, but was equally certain that you would find the work tiresome and unchallenging. He was unprepared for your candour – if not in explicitly admitting what you were up to and with whom, then certainly by not denying such, he was woefully unarmoured against hearing your thoughts on malleable young men.
His brows arched, he halted in their progress and turned to face you, his eyes shrewd for a moment while he searched your own, seeking the coltish, inquisitive lass he knew when but a lad himself, she who had somehow blinded him to the woman you had grown into since.
And he called himself an investigator, tch.
“I confess, Lila, to being all astonishment at the… how shall we call them, worldly? – ways that you now wield as your own.”
He gave a slow shake of his head and then simply chuckled, the sound soft, under his breath, and aimed entirely at himself. Clearly, he had missed this version, the dangerous widow teasingly accused you of becoming, taking form. A girl no more, then. He would not forget it.
“Well,” he offered finally, smiling with it. “Shall we take tea, before a vocation in childcare -- or something altogether less fit for polite conversation, calls you away?”
Just not my month.

“Only almost always…?” she teases with an arched brow and an impish grin. The tension in her shoulders had barely set in before you had melted it clean away, leaving her feeling light-hearted and in uncommonly good humour, even for her.On your arm and with Spring soon to yield to Summer, the dark days of Winter and the fever that had almost stolen her felt like a faded memory. You were right, life was fleeting, and she determined now to make the most of hers, and as wickedly as she could.
“Hmmm… I had not considered becoming a governess…” she says with exaggerated deliberation. Had her hand been free and not looped in your arm she might even have stroked her chin thoughtfully for effect.
“But,” she smiles up at you with a knowing look, revealing a glimpse of her that you had never seen before - a worldlier woman, who blossoming under her lover’s tutelage was beginning to understand what she was, and was not, willing to settle for. “I dare say that malleable young men are vastly over-rated.” And, implicit in that statement, of no interest to her. Anymore.
“Oh look! Here we are already.”
