“Only almost always…?” she teases with an arched brow and an impish grin. The tension in her shoulders had barely set in before you had melted it clean away, leaving her feeling light-hearted and in uncommonly good humour, even for her.

On your arm and with Spring soon to yield to Summer, the dark days of Winter and the fever that had almost stolen her felt like a faded memory. You were right, life was fleeting, and she determined now to make the most of hers, and as wickedly as she could.

“Hmmm… I had not considered becoming a governess…” she says with exaggerated deliberation. Had her hand been free and not looped in your arm she might even have stroked her chin thoughtfully for effect.

“But,” she smiles up at you with a knowing look, revealing a glimpse of her that you had never seen before - a worldlier woman, who blossoming under her lover’s tutelage was beginning to understand what she was, and was not, willing to settle for. “I dare say that malleable young men are vastly over-rated.” And, implicit in that statement, of no interest to her. Anymore.
