They ate in silence and only his eyes showed that he enjoyed her cooking, the flavor of the stew was full and wholesome. He did not eat much so once he was done he took a piece of bread mopped some sauce up and began to eat it pushing the pan over to the girl to eat her fill and gain some sustenance. He was grateful that she had made a wholesome meal, he had been living off dried meat or fish and rice balls, it was good to have a hot meal now that there were two of them. Somehow he felt comfortable with the girl, something that did not come easily for him.

He leaned back now on his left elbow his feet stretched out as she went to go and clean the pan. When she returned he would pack everything away stowing them in his satchel.

He thought now of home and his time with his mother and his friends and teachers. He had learned much from his clan in his earlier years, their tradition and culture was strong in him. The mainland had diluted that somewhat which was understandable although it still kept him apart from the others, he was proud to be Pani, a cultured and refined person.

The girl returned kneeling nearby where he caught the yawn and with a knowing smile gestured at a place at his feet where she could rest and sleep. He would keep watch until late before he too would fall asleep.
