A return to the open area of the club, this time ascending the stairs to the VIP balconies where a greater degree of privacy was afforded. There I claimed a booth with a view of the expansive floor and divided my attention between reminisces and the phone in my hand.The calm and quiet was a bizarre contrast to the heat and thrill that would begin a couple hours from now. Like walking backstage before a magician's act, the atmosphere was entirely different when the magic was absent. More honest, more ordinary. But intent had a way of painting secrets onto any canvas and the knowledge of what the night would bring brought a certain indescribable anticipation to that otherwise plain visage. What paint would the guests bring? Which passions would inspire the strokes and thus shape the portrait of the evening? Inspiration could be found anywhere, if you had the imagination to tease forth it's waiting secrets.
I drank from a bottle of water and exchanged texts, viewed emails and wandered a few favorite haunts on the web; whiling away the hour in idleness. I had no plans for what the night might bring or where I would spend it, allowing myself the freedom of a night without expectations and mostly absent of responsibility. A kind of night which was growing rarer and rarer with each year as success imposed it's own obligations. Perhaps inspiration would make it a memorable one but if not, it would remain one of those unburdened evenings where true relaxation could be found regardless of how it was indulged.
