It was a spell gone wrong that brought the original settlers to the Badlands.

The Mage attempted to return his people back to where they were from. Only each time that a porthole was opened instead of taking them home. It turned out to be a one way passage that only brought more people to the Badlands.

When the English ships were brought over, with even more deadly weapons then the ones that came before them. The Mage cast one more spell that blanketed the Badlands preventing any more spells being cast by him or anyone else.

Now the only magic to be found in these lands is the residual effects of the spells cast by the Mage that has been absorbed into the lands and waters which have the effect of slowing the aging of the humans once they reach adulthood till their lifespans rival those of the Elves and Dwarves.
