The nurses wheel the gurney along, the many machines keeping the body stable, beeping, pumping, outputting. It passes each pair along the hallway. Most, if not all, including Sebastian, bow their head as they pass.He could count on one hand the number of honor walks he's seen in this Med Center.
They hit like an armor piercing incendiary bullet to the heart.
Staff, the ones that can be standing here, watching that person wheeled past them. It changes something in them. Even the ones who worked for decades, years, seen it all, seen death a thousand times. To see someone wheeled to give all they have left to people they'd never met.
His head feels so heavy in it's bow. His eyes lowered to the floor. Like it was held there by ball and chain by the weight of the moment.
The fact that something like this could exist in Night City.
The wheeled patient turns a corner and is gone.
The lights overhead return to their standard hue, and a feed of triage information overtakes all the messaging software of the staff and they are to immediately report to the next patient. Move on. Work.
But this moment would not soon be forgotten. l/p
"Oh! You're welcome. And I'm glad to have met you, too."Smiles dreamily.
"Have a nice day..."

The years had taken away his tears for situations like this. Experience has robbed him to some degree of loss for the patients that come through in endless number. It's not all gone though. A tension in the forehead. A shaking of a breath. The sting of pressure from the outside of his eyelids. Brief. Simple. Passing. He stands up, breathes clear again, and goes over their chart. The automated AI of the Med Center had already sent out information to all necessary sources, even the emergency contact list of individuals that hadn't come or responded. A corporate representative was said to be available in 24 hours. Typical. There is something that catches his eye in the documentation here. Something that mattered very little during the procedures, but now was so rare it was like finding a diamond in a mountain of bleak stone. Something rare for the Platinum wing of this center. So rare, that the policy had to be looked up.
This patient was considered a donor. Few Platinum members were. Many implants could be sold, same for organs, often bought out by wealthy compatibles or for the cloning banks. There was no need for a black market with enough commas.
This patient leaves it all to the needy. The people in the lower rungs of this Med Center that required it most, regardless of price. The patient was young, relatively. Their existing hardware was Tier 4, well implanted and quality. The implants he had put in himself these past 24 hours were also all Platinum wing tiered. They would all be processed by need, not policy. It was allowed. Contractually the Med Center must follow it. Also, by policy, in some hidden byline, five minutes are to be spared for what comes next.
A glow in the lights of the hallway that was triggered. An automated message sent to the wing for non-emergency dutied employees. So many receive it, and don't understand at first. It's so rare.
Two nurses come in, practitioners who have been through it before, and they worked quick to convert the hospital bed to its gurney mobility. They would be taken to another wing for the transplantation and donation.
The rest of the staff were fed instructions via implant to follow the almost unheard of policy. Many freeze in place after reading it.
Sebastian steps aside, steps outside the hallway, and stands tall.
Followed by sixteen other staff, not currently in emergency work, they all line the hall. Some confused, some somber, some awed.
