Yes, we call our little yellow lab rescue girl that all the time *S*
She is having a very hard time right now. Her hips are so stiff, she has a hard time walking. We have never seen her run or play. Last week, she developed what looked like a huge blister on her elbow. We noticed it right after dinner, and decided we would call the vet first thing in the morning.
Overnight, it broke, so looked less serious in the morning, but off to vet anyway to make sure.Doc was unsure of what was going on, and put Annie on antibiotics.
I am having a terrible time getting her to take the meds ...hiding them in all kinds of goodies...she catches on and spits them out so often ... only two more days of the meds to go ... I'm determined to make sure she gets them down *sigh*
In the meantime, she has also gone off her food ...*bigger sigh*
The only good thing going Annie's way right now is that my husband built her a walk out deck and small ramp from the back door ...she likes that a lot!
I know you all mean well, and cooking those foods would certainly work ... but she is a Lab ...even on the small side, she is still a Lab ...if a little breed, I would cook for a dog ... but not starting that with Labs. We switched to a salmon based kibble and she is eating now BIG sigh of reliefI think she stopped eating her boring kibble because of all the treat foods she was getting to get her antibiotics into her LOL. The roast beef wrapped around the pills is getting them into her and the salmon kibble is getting her nutrient into her. *s*
Annie is on Gabapentin and Camelina oil for her joints ... I will check about adding glucosamine with the Vet. Thank you all so very much for your care and concern. I appreciate it more than you can ever know!
polly, i can vouch for the glucosamine, i gave it to my bullies, my sis also, and as the chicken liver, they can't resist, i stir fry them with a little butter, the chicken, cooked and served in its own broth, with some carrots and very little large noodles is a winner too, my dog was a champion, i guess he knew it and was very finicky *LOL* i hope Annie Bananie will feel as joyous as her name fast 🤗
To help with her hip joint stiffness, I suggest looking into an over the counter supplement: glucosamine for dogs. Most dogs like the easy to dispense, daily soft chews kind. The effects are accumulative, so it takes a couple weeks to really start feeling better, and maybe 3-6 weeks to reach full benefit levels. It does help quite a bit.Our new little, older, fox-faced pom is named Auggie Doggie.
7-pounds (half a stone) and has become the absolute joy of our home.
**Also, heart chambers make a great hiding spot for pills.
Try making a mix of chicken livers/hearts/gizzards
(boiled) and then throw rice into the broth until it's
cooked - can put veggies in here too (no potatoes or
anything form the nightshade family) - that should
bring her around for eating. soft smile
She's not that old, timbre ...although her age is just an educated guess ... She was supposed to be 5 when we got her ... Doc figured more like 7 ...which means she is about 10 now.I guess living in a car with her first mama was hard on her physically as well as mentally/emotionally ...
Second to steak (which I wouldn't hesitate to do) we have some thin sliced prime rib roast and wrapping bits of that around her meds has been working now ...hopefully will get us through the next 2 days (crossing fingers)
Thank you all for your kind thoughts ... I feel your support
I hope doggy gets better soon!
Prayers for sweet Annie Bananie and mama.If you make some steak (yep, steak) and grill or pan fry it in butter, you can cut up little pieces and tuck her antibiotic in it. This is what I did for my sweet Nicky ("Nick Knack") when he was sick and couldn't or wouldn't take his pills. He ate the steak and took his meds all gone.
Hope she turns the corner sooner than later.
sending love
I do hope you do get those antibiotics into her and she will get better.
prayers for Annie Bananie and you and your husband too
Bless you, Annie Bananie, and your kind, handy husband.
I'm sorry to hear of Annie's troubles. Getting meds into my cat results in bloodshed (mine) so I understand how challenging a task it is. Lifting prayers for Annie, you and your family through this tough time.
Oh wishing all the best for your sweet Annie!
my goodness, i hope it all turns out ok
i can't believe she's gotten that old already
