Fort Leavenworth was established in 1827 to protect settlers and merchants heading west along the Santa Fe Trail. After the Kansas-Nebraska Act was signed, Leavenworth became the first city in Kansas #onthisday in 1854 and the fort was tasked with maintaining the peace. This 1881 lithograph shows Fort Leavenworth’s officer’s quarters, barracks, hospital, and guard house. The fort is the third oldest continuously active military base in the country, and the oldest active military instillation west of the Mississippi River.
