Crossing at last to the umbrella stand just inside the office’s doorway, he considered his choices and then withdrew a battered looking cane of yew wood, darkly finished and capped with a simple, polished brass grip. Twisting the handle, he slowly eased out the gleaming length of silver-gilt steel within, the fading daylight catching on the razor-edge of the hidden blade before he snapped it shut again and twisted it back in place.

Preparation was key for such a hunt, even for one of his experience. His tools had already been checked and tended to, and mentally he was prepared. Turning away from the window then, he moved to his desk and poured a generous dram from the uncorked bottle of single malt there into a heavy crystal tumbler.

Lifting the tumbler, he drank deeply, then filled the glass again and savoured the peat smoke this time as the amber liquor warmed him from within. The creatures he hunted had senses beyond the ken of man, and would smell the alcohol not only on his breath but escaping his pores – this was part of the act for the evening’s performance.

To complete the effect, he dipped two fingers into his glass and dabbed the whisky just behind and beneath his ears, then splashed a bit of it onto the lapel of his coat. He wanted to look and smell the part as he played it, all the better to sell the act.

Glancing upward at the sky, he noted the sun slipping towards the horizon and withdrew his pocket watch to check the time. Soon.
